Extra Time Cinema: A New Social Space by XU Studio

Transforming Traditional Cinemas into Multifunctional Social Hubs

In an era of rapid technological advancement, personal interactions are dwindling. XU Studio, a renowned design team, has taken a bold step to counter this trend with their innovative design of the Extra Time Cinema. This project, winner of the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, reimagines the traditional cinema as a social space, fostering communication and interaction.

The Extra Time Cinema, located in Shanghai, is not just a cinema but a multifunctional space with a bar at its core. This space encourages social interactions, allowing people to enjoy a cup of coffee, read a book, purchase their favourite videos, attend salon lectures, and meet new friends. This innovative design concept was inspired by the designers' desire to promote more person-to-person communication in an increasingly digital world.

What sets the Extra Time Cinema apart is its flexible design. The bar at the entrance serves as the center of a semi-circular space with a radius of nine meters, creating a versatile area for various activities. Beyond its daily cafe function, this space has hosted movie lecture salons, modern dance performances, and even product launches.

The design of the cinema is as unique as its concept. The top of the semi-circular area at the entrance is adorned with cost-effective sunlight panels, arranged in curved stainless steel grooves. When the lights are turned on, the entire panel illuminates, casting an enchanting ambient light that transitions from blue to green and rose red. This ingenious use of light and color enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the space.

Despite the project's location on the B2 floor of a shopping mall, behind a large staircase, the designers managed to make the cinema stand out. They wrapped the exterior facade of the solid wall with a folded stainless steel mirror surface, creating an interactive projection device at the door to attract passersby. This creative solution overcame the challenge posed by the property owners' refusal to open the entire facade.

Throughout the design process, XU Studio advocated for economy and environmental protection, using simple and common materials to create rich and interesting effects. This approach is evident in the arc-shaped decorative material suspended in the air, which leaves a lasting impression on customers. The project, covering a total of 800 square meters, is a testament to the designers' belief that ordinary, inexpensive materials can create stunning visual effects and provide interesting experiences for customers.

In conclusion, the Extra Time Cinema by XU Studio is a groundbreaking design that transforms the traditional cinema into a multifunctional social space. This innovative concept, coupled with the designers' commitment to economy and environmental protection, has earned the project the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020. The Extra Time Cinema serves as a shining example of how design can foster social interaction in an increasingly digital world.
